Our Journey
History of Ikoyi Baptist Church, Lagos
Ikoyi Baptist Church was born out of a burden for non-Yoruba-speaking members of First Baptist Church Broad Street, Lagos, who struggled to have a meaningful worship experience due to language barriers. A group of concerned Baptists—including Rev. & Mrs B. T. Griffin, Deacon & Mrs A. L. Sikes, Mrs Ethel Mae Moseley, and Rev. (Dr) & Mrs E.A. Dahunsi—took steps to address this need. Through divine providence, Chief Mrs Ayo Manuwa made her school facilities at Biaduo Street, S. W. Ikoyi available for services. Deacon Sholeye (later Rev. Sholeye) was released from First Baptist Church to lead the new congregation, and the first service was held on May 28, 1967, with 27 people in attendance—20 children and 7 adults.
The young church acted in faith, commissioning architectural drawings for a permanent building even before acquiring land. The Baptist Mission granted permission to use the land at 5, Bell Avenue, adjoining the Baptist Mission House, and on June 15, 1994, the Board of Trustees of the Baptist Mission of Nigeria officially transferred the property to Ikoyi Baptist Church. Through the sacrificial giving of time and resources by members, the church building was completed. On July 22, 2012, a new sanctuary with a seating capacity of 2,500 worshippers, constructed by Cappa & D'Alberto Plc, was dedicated to the glory of God.
The church was formally organised on October 6, 1974, with four deacons ordained: Dn Oluwole, Dn Okanla, Dn Fadayomi, Dn Malafa, and Dn Harvey. Over the years, the church has been blessed with faithful pastoral leadership — Rev. J.A. Sholeye (1967–1991), Rev. Prof. Yusuf Ameh Obaje as Interim Pastor (1991–1992), Rev. Dr Abayomi Enitan Lawal (1992–2017), and currently Rev. Dr Thomas Olusegun Adeleke, who assumed office on December 1, 2017.
"Today, Ikoyi Baptist Church stands as a Bible-believing congregation affiliated with the Nigerian Baptist Convention, the Lagos State Baptist Conference, and the Shalom Baptist Association. The church continues to pursue its vision of building intimacy with God and reaching the world with the Love of Christ—a legacy that began with 27 faithful souls nearly six decades ago."

Meet Our Leaders

Rev. Dr. Olusegun Adeleke
Rev'd Dr. Thomas Olusegun Adeleke was born and raised as a Baptist boy. His parents ensured that he went through the ranks and files of the appropriate organizations of the church as he grew up. He participated in Sunbeam, Royal Ambassadors and Youth wing of the Church. He received Christ as his personal Lord and Saviour in October 1983, and was baptized by immersion at Calvary Baptist Church, Olodi Apapa on December 16th, 1984. In 1995, he surrendered his pursuit of a doctorate to respond to the lingering call of God over his life. Thus, he proceeded to the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary, Ogbomoso and obtained a Master of Divinity in Theology (1995-1998). After twelve (12) years of full gospel ministry, he returned to school and obtained his Doctor of Ministry from the Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City, Missouri, U.S.A (2010-2013). He got married to his amiable, loving and industrious wife, Dr Mrs. Martina Adeleke (nee Fregene) on August 7th, 1993, and the marriage is blessed with a daughter, AyanfeOluwa Adeleke and numerous spiritual children. Rev'd Dr Adeleke is a Pastor by calling, but also does the work of an evangelist when occasion demands. He has a passion for intercession, discipleship, leadership development, encouragement, writing, Church planting and Church revitalization. Rev. Dr Segun Adeleke resumed as the Church Pastor of Ikoyi Baptist Church, Lagos on December 1, 2017. He will appreciate your daily intercession to enable him to fulfil the purpose of God in and through Ikoyi Baptist Church.
Church Administration
The administration of Ikoyi Baptist Church operates through a Church Council that provides strategic oversight and governance for the church's ministries and operations. Working collaboratively with the pastoral team, the administration coordinates the church's five-fold purpose: Worship, Fellowship, Discipleship, Evangelism, and Ministry.
Key administrative functions include supporting the various Purpose Driven Vehicles (PDVs) that organise church life, facilitating training programmes for Church Officers and Workers through the Education and Training Ministry, and ensuring the church remains responsive to contemporary challenges facing the congregation.
The administration also maintains the church's affiliations with the Nigerian Baptist Convention, the Lagos State Baptist Conference, and the Shalom Baptist Association.
Through regular Church Council meetings and an annual retreat, the leadership prayerfully steers the church towards its vision of building intimacy with God and reaching the world with the Love of Christ—a mission that has guided Ikoyi Baptist Church since its founding in 1967.
